Karl’s journey in architecture has been shaped by a passion for thoughtful, enduring design and an appreciation for the natural world. He completed his undergraduate studies in architecture at Washington University in St. Louis and earned his master’s degree from the University of Minnesota. His early career included work as a project designer at Ellerbe Becket, where he contributed to a range of domestic and international projects. After gaining experience at a boutique design firm in Minneapolis, he was recruited to join the design team at RSP Architects for the prestigious Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix.
In 2013, Karl founded KA Design LLC, a Minneapolis-based design studio specializing in residential architecture.
Beyond design, Karl is deeply connected to the outdoors. A competitive ultra-runner, biker, and skier, he embraces endurance challenges with the same dedication he brings to design. When not immersed in his work, he enjoys long walks with his wife and their dog, finding inspiration in nature’s landscapes and rhythms.

With a philosophy rooted in the integration of client vision, site-specific design, and artfully crafted spaces, Karl strives to produce designs that are appealing, and responsible—buildings that are both energy-efficient and a delight to inhabit.
